A Day in the Life of a Student at Hopewell Academy
Students at Hopewell Academy follow a traditional academic schedule, starting at 8:30 in the morning. A student will arrive through the front doors, be greeted by name by a member of the Hopewell faculty, and make their way down to the Assembly Room for morning attendance and announcements. As a Connected School, all students participate in a brief morning assembly including daily attendance, morning announcements, and the Pledge of Allegiance. Students are given an opportunity to share their own announcements alongside school and faculty announcements.
After Assembly, students head off to the Locker Room to store or gather their books then head to their first period class, where they will again be greeted by name by their teacher and immediately begin a warm up in one of their four core classes. In each class, students are given the opportunity to ask questions, practice the skills laid out in the curriculum, and work cooperatively with their peers and teachers. Many classes incorporate hands-on projects and technology to supplement instruction and keep students engaged and active in their own education. Some lessons will be flipped engaging students the evening before and allowing more interaction in the classroom. This will continue through each of the first four periods of the day, one for each of the core classes.
Following morning classes, students take a break for lunch. Middle School students typically eat their lunches in the Cafeteria, where they either bring their own lunch or have a catered lunch organized by the Hopewell Academy Parent Teacher Organization. During this time, students have the opportunity to eat, unwind, meet with their friends, and even work with their teachers if necessary. High School students have the same opportunities, but typically eat their lunches either in the Cafeteria or the High School lounge. Students in the Eleventh and Twelfth grade who are meeting their academic requirements may enjoy eating off-campus at the numerous restaurants within walking distance of our Academy.
After lunch, students convene for afternoon classes, which consist of any number of art, physical education, sports, science, or technical or cultural electives that students choose at the beginning of each quarter or year. This time gives students the opportunity to broaden their experiences beyond the core curriculum, and perhaps uncovering a new area about which they are truly interested. These courses are taught by Hopewell teachers who are genuinely passionate about the subjects they are working with, either professionally or in their personal time, so that students have the opportunity to truly engage with their elective subjects. Many of our students come from talented families and parents are welcome to volunteer in the classroom.
Finally, students are dismissed to go home or participate in a number of after school clubs, sports, or activities at 3:15 in the afternoon. Many students take advantage of this, participating in things like Basketball, art club, drama, technology or fencing. Regardless of interests, every student has the opportunity to get involved in something that brings the entire Hopewell Academy community together.
